Digital Nomads in Europe: Spain or France? Know Your Visa Options

1. The Rise of the Digital Nomad

A digital nomad is someone who works remotely, often with just a laptop and internet, and chooses to live abroad. Whether freelancers, contractors, or employees with flexible setups, they work online while enjoying the freedom to move.

Since the 2020 pandemic, this lifestyle has exploded. France and Spain have become two of the most popular destinations in Europe.
But there's a catch: What visa do you need to do this legally? And is your current setup really compliant?

To answer that, Administra-Vie (France) and MigratioLex (Spain) have teamed up to break it down for you.

2. First, Are You from the EU or Not?

EU/EEA Nationals
Good news: You don’t need a visa to move to France or Spain. But if you stay in Spain for more than 90 days, you must register as a resident and show proof of sufficient means.
Non-EU Nationals
This is where things get more complex — and more interesting. Keep reading to see your options in both countries.

3. France: No Nomad Visa (Yet), but Alternatives Exist

A. Short-Stay Visa (Schengen)

Stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period in the Schengen Area, including France.

Best for: short visits, workations, or testing the lifestyle.
Not renewable — once you hit the 90/180-day limit, you must leave the Schengen Zone.
Reminder: France and Spain, as Schengen member states, allow nationals of certain countries — such as the United States, Canada, Argentina, etc. — to enter without a visa for short stays (up to 90 days within any 180-day period).
B. Long-Stay “Visitor” Visa

Live in France for 6–12 months. Working for a French employer is not allowed, but remote work for foreign clients is generally accepted.

Requirements:
No French clients
Prove stable income (equal or above minimum wage)
Renewable annually
Suitable for: Primarily intended for financially well-established individuals.
C. Talent Card: Project Leader

Want to build a business in France?

You’ll need:
Master’s degree or 5+ years’ experience
Solid business plan
€30,000 in investment
Proof of financial means at least equal to the French minimum wage (SMIC)
Good for: entrepreneurs ready to invest and commit.
D. Entrepreneur / Freelance Visa

Designed for self-employed professionals aiming to establish their activity in France.
Requires a viable business model and compliance with French regulations, including social security and tax obligations.

Best suited for: freelancers, independent consultants, and solo entrepreneurs.

4. Spain: Yes, There's A Real Digital Nomad Visa

Since 2023, Spain offers a proper Digital Nomad Visa under its Startups Law. It’s one of the most accessible in Europe.

Main requirements:
Be employed by a foreign company or be a business owner/freelancer with at least 80% of your income generated outside Spain
Have a job that allows you to work remotely
Earn a minimum annual income of €32,000
Hold a university degree or have at least 3 years of professional experience as a qualified professional
Key Benefits

5. What Does The Future Hold In France?

France has not (yet) created a digital nomad visa, but change may be coming. As more countries adopt dedicated pathways for remote workers, France is likely to follow. For now, alternatives exist, but they require planning.

6. Conclusion

France:
Although there’s no specific digital nomad visa yet, multiple visa options exist depending on your work type and project — from short stays to long-term visitor or entrepreneur visas. Each requires careful planning to fit your situation.

Spain:
Offers a straightforward, dedicated Digital Nomad Visa designed specifically for remote workers, freelancers, and entrepreneurs. It provides clarity, flexibility, and long-term residency options up to 5 years.
